The Scoop on what causes Acid Reflux

What causes Acid Reflux? The words Acid Reflux means acid is flowing back. Reflux means to 'flow back'. The acid that is supposed to stay in the stomach to digest the food we swallow is coming back up into the swallowing tube that connects the mouth to the stomach called the esophagus.

Stomach acid also known as gastric acid is a digestive juice or fluid made in the stomach. The stomach makes a mucous coating lining for protection from eating itself. It’s main job is to digest and break down food proteins by helping digestive enzymes.

Proteins make up meat, beans, milk, eggs, and other protein foods. You have probably heard of enzymes. Enzymes are very important for digestion and without enzymes our digestion becomes almost impossible. What causes acid reflux is lack of enzymes for one thing. Enzymes are in live foods and needed to digest food.

Stomach acid has a PH of 1.3-3.35. PH is a measure of acid and alkaline. A muscular ring at the lower esophagus where it connects to the stomach called the LES valve that looks like a tight muscle, is supposed to relax and open when the food is swallowed going into the stomach and close tightly after the food is in the stomach.

Sometimes this valve does not close completely and opens a little bit allowing stomach acid to flow back up the esophagus tube causing burning of the mucous lining of the esophagus and severe pain.

This burning feeling can happen just after swallowing or several hours later, especially if laying down flat or bending over to pick something up. It can also happen when any pressure is put on a full stomach.

Causes of acid reflux could be from what we eat, drink, smoking, being overweight or medications we take. Nicotine relaxes the LES flap preventing the valve from closing properly allowing back flow of stomach acid juices into the esophagus. The valve may also be faulty from birth. Excess weight including pregnancy can also cause acid reflux especially when lying down after a meal.

There are a few other reasons for Acid Reflux that are little known and may not be so pleasant to discuss, however it is information that you will want to know about in order to round out the 'whole picture'.

Since many people have pets it is important to know that our little dear friends carry parasites. Parasites are easily transferred to humans so you want to read about this. Another biggy is yeast, also known as candida, fungus or mold that can cause lots of problems with the digestive tract.

What causes acid reflux is too many acidic foods and beverages and not enough alkaline foods. Alkaline foods will help you get rid of reflux. Depending on the degree of reflux and how long a person has had it there may be several ways one can completely avoid and remedy this condition ranging from easy cheap natural treatments to medications and positioning.

To test for acid reflux an endoscopy by a physician is preformed along with lab work and a swallowing test, esophageal manometry, that assesses the swallowing function.

Some different terms used are (GERD) which is Gastroesophageal reflux disease (Gord) gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, gastric reflux or acid reflux disease. Another kind of reflux that effects coughing or breathing is called (LPR) or laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Most people just use the simple words of heartburn, indigestion or GERD.
